Things to Do

As the fourth largest city in America, there are loads of things to do in Houston. Whether you prefer to spend the day at one of the great museums throughout Houston or ride a train, there is something for everyone in Houston. Below are some ideas that you and your family may enjoy (in no particular order):

If you are looking for things to do in Houston that are out of the ordinary, Dewberry Farm is the place to be. With their pig races, singing chickens, a slide mountain, a carousel and a train, just to name a few of the adventures, there is definitely something for visitors of all ages at the Dewberry Farm. During the Christmas tree season most of the fun-filled activities will be available that are normally available during the Fall season. Check their website for some holiday fun.

Learn about space! Space Center Houston is the official visitor center for NASA’s Johnson Space Center. Visitors will be able to learn about the history of space travel and exploration through permanent exhibits, special attractions and theater showings. Space Center Houston will be opening their 122-foot wooden Explorer replica to the public. Visitors will be able to climb inside the replica of Explorer to receive a once-in-a lifetime behind-the-scenes look at what it is actually like to be inside of a space shuttle. This exhibit is not offered anywhere else in the world!

Explore 90,000 square feet of space chock full of interactive exhibits at the Children’s Museum of Houston. Free family nights are offered every Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M.  There are plenty of hands-on activities to keep kids of all ages busy. Some of the fun and interactive exhibits include magic mirrors, puzzles, a building zone and a special area just for toddlers.

Try a new restaurant while supporting a great cause. During Houston Restaurant Weeks, proceeds benefit the Houston Food Bank. Visit the website to see which restaurants are participating.

Want to cool off? Check out Gateway Fountain at Discovery Green. Discovery Green is open 365 days a year from 6:00 AM to 11:00 P.M. Their ice skating rink is actually on a real lake. Park entry is free! Check website for cost details on specific events.

Dinosaurs! Come visit the Houston Museum of Natural Science and check out the new Hall of Paleontology. Free admission on Tuesdays from 2:00 to 6:00 P.M. For children, the Butterfly Center, housing hundreds of winged creatures, is a highlight. Hours and admission information is available on the website.

Discover over 400 species of marine life and dine alongside a 150,000 gallon two-story tank at Downtown Aquarium. Witness White Tigers lounging about, pet a stingray, go on an exhilarating train ride through the Shark Voyage, or ride their giant Ferris Wheel. Make reservations to be a part of Breakfast with Santa. Santa actually makes a guest appearance inside the tank!

The Woodlands' Winter Wonderland may be worth the drive. Holiday in the Woodlands, just 20 minutes north of downtown Houston, is a celebration that takes place from Nov. 20 to Jan. 17 and features a variety of activities for children and adults. Check the website for more details.

Of course, these are just a few of the many things for families to do in Houston; check out the visitors’ bureau website for more ideas.
